The General Director of the Basque Energy Cluster, José Ignacio Hormaeche, participated in the first meeting of the Industrial Defense Group held at the Kursaal on February 12, under the chairmanship of the Lehendakari and the Minister of Industry, Energy Transition, and Sustainability, Mikel Jauregi. Representatives from 9 companies associated with the Energy Cluster also attended: Iberdrola, Arteche, Ingeteam, EVE, Petronor, CAF, Mondragón Group, Tubacex, and Sidenor.
This new forum promoted by the Basque Government is configured as a 'stable space for inter-institutional and multifactor participation whose objective is to analyze, agree upon, and propose innovative policies that respond to the challenges faced by the Basque industry in the current international context.' The Industrial Defense Group will include the participation of the Basque Government, chambers of commerce, provincial councils, Confebask, representatives of clusters, and companies from the country's productive fabric. The meeting began with an intervention by the Lehendakari, in which he reported on recent meetings and contacts he has had with Commissioners and representatives of European institutions and highlighted the sense of urgency they conveyed because 'the world is closing in terms of trade and security, and Europe must protect itself.' Minister Mikel Jauregi presented the proposed working dynamics for this Industrial Defense Group and its triple mission: to share the diagnosis of the new tariff reality and monitor the affected sectors; to identify the instruments, resources, and policies available to support companies; and to enhance the capabilities and opportunities of the Basque industry in the new global context. Next, four of the attendees (at the request of the Basque Government) presented their vision of the situation and the challenges their organizations face: Gregorio Rojo, President of the Chamber of Commerce of Alava; Carlos Martínez de las Heras, CEO of Tubos Reunidos; Anton Pradera, President of CIE Automotive; and Xabier Ortueta, Director of AFM (Machine Tool Cluster). In the second part of the meeting, the 40 participants were divided into 5 groups, where they analyzed the impacts of possible tariff changes, proposed measures and actions to support the various administrations, and offered their experience and contributions to the Industrial Defense Group. The Energy Cluster participated in the final plenary session as spokesperson for group 2 (which also included the associated companies IBERDROLA, ARTECHE, and INGETEAM) to present the group's contributions and conclusions.
