José Ignacio Hormaeche, the director of the Basque Energy Cluster and member of the BH2C Board of Directors, presented the Basque Hydrogen Corridor at the plenary session on “Intersectoral synergies: the role of hydrogen valleys”, within the framework of the European Hydrogen Energy Conference (EHEC) 2024, which was held at the BEC in Bilbao this year.
In his speech, Hormaeche highlighted key factors that make the Basque Country a region with significant opportunities in the field of Hydrogen: its strategic location, the weighting of industrial sectors that are to be decarbonised in its economy, and the technological and industrial capabilities of its value chain. In this context, he explained Petronor's strategy to start up 3 electrolysers (of 2.5, 10, and 100 MW) in the coming years, as the foundation and reference for the 52 projects and 73 companies that currently form part of the BH2C. He also showcased the most relevant achievements and milestones to date of projects under way. He then went on to analyse how the BH2C aligns with the “Net Zero Basque Industrial Supercluster”, an initiative promoted by the Basque Government in which the Roadmaps have been defined to decarbonise industrial sectors with the highest CO2 emissions based on their energy consumption. In the final part of his speech, Hormaeche highlighted some success factors of the BH2C such as the cross-cutting activities in all the projects, the Abanto Technology Park, the Hydrogen Knowledge Classroom (in which universities and Vocational Training Centres of the Basque Country participate), and the Basque Energy Cluster's Hydrogen Sector, which over the last 3 years has become a central point where more than 150 companies and agents in the value chain gather and share experiences.
