On 1 December last, the Basque Energy Cluster (ACE), together with the Environment Cluster (ACLIMA) organised a workshop for more than 70 persons, held in a mixed physical and virtual space. The session was divided into three thematic blocks: Ecodesign and the Circular Economy at corporate level and its impact on supplier management; Application of Product Environmental Declarations in the case of a wind farm; and Reduction of environmental impact on manufacturing and production processes by means of recovering surplus heat.
The event was organised as part of the Elkarlanean project, developed by ACE and ACLIMA, with funding from the Bizkaia Provincial Council. ACE Managing Director José Ignacio Hormaeche, and ACLIMA Director Olga Martín, alongside Joseba Mariezkurrena, Head of the Bizkaia Provincial Council Office for Entrepreneurship and Business Competitiveness, opened the session, highlighting the importance of working together and the energy and environmental sectors, particularly in the current situation, when Europe and the world are looking to the green economy for recovery.
The session tackled a series of circular economy initiatives being carried out in the energy sector, as inspiration for new projects in the field. The workshop was divided into three thematic blocks, based on the interests and priorities specified by ACE members and ACLIMA in a prior interview.
The first block looked at aspects of ecodesign at corporate level and its impact on supplier management, focussing heavily on the electricity sector. Power distributor E-REDES described the circular economy initiatives and projects it has put in place as part of its power grid assets management strategy. This was followed by a talk from SIMPPLE focussing on regulations and strategy, pinpointing the ecodesign directives that affect the energy sector. Next up was BOSLAN, who presented NEOSUB, their strategic Hazitek project for developing an ecodesigned substation concept, in which they head up a consortium of seven Basque-based businesses.
The second block concentrated on the wind sector and featured a general talk from Ihobe on Product Environmental Declarations, focussed on the wind sector by IK Engineering. Siemens Gamesa brought the panel to a close with its vision on the importance of the circular economy for the sector.
The third and final block dealt with the circular economy from the point of view of energy efficiency and waste, and on using surplus heat and/or waste to reduce the environmental impact of industrial manufacturing and production processes. The research projects of Tecnalia and Tekniker brought the most innovative vision, while IDOM presented a series of engineering projects as profitable, successful cases for initiatives of this type.
Based on the talks and contributions from the participants, ACE and ACLIMA will give a boost to the identification of specific partnership opportunities, in the form of consortia and proposals for projects in those areas with the greatest potential for development and which awaken the greatest interest among businesses, which may then be channelled through a range of programmes and aid packages.
