Representatives of 40 organisations took part in a workshop organised by the Basque Energy Cluster, in collaboration with Tecnalia, on 17 January 2018 at Bizkaia Technology Park (Zamudio), to present evolution predictions for the photovoltaic sector, to learn about the capabilities and opportunities for Basque companies in this market, and to analyse together the potential of collaborating to face challenges and opportunities presented.
The first part of the workshop included three talks aimed at contextualising the sector. Eduardo Román, Head of Solar PV Energy at Tecnalia, presented a full overview of the current situation, predominant technology, the most active markets and future trends. Javier Marqués, Technical Director of the EVE (Basque Energy Agency), explained how solar photovoltaic energy fits into the Euskadi 2030 energy strategy. José Ignacio Hormaeche, Managing Director of the Basque Energy Cluster, closed this block with a summary of Basque sector figures, and he analysed the business position in the value chain. Then there was a lengthy business panel with 13 speakers from various segments of the value chain. Representatives of DOMINION, IBERDROLA, BIKOTE SOLAR, GES, METEO FOR ENERGY, ORMAZABAL, ENNERA, MONDRAGON ASSEMBLY, INGETEAM, JEMA, CEGASA PORTABLE ENERGY, BATZ ENERGY and STANSOL presented their specific offers for the solar photovoltaic market, talked about their main challenges and identified possible ways of collaborating.
After the panel there was an interesting debate on the various types of actions that could be carried out collectively, and on business opportunities for the photovoltaic industry arising from business collaboration. The session proved that the Basque industry is highly interested in solar photovoltaic energy, and that there is a solid value chain that covers practically all the segments that make up the sector and that encourages added value as an element that makes businesses stand out in a market that is clearly marked by costs.
As a result of this business interest and the possibilities that were identified, the workshop ended with the launch of the Basque Energy Cluster's new solar photovoltaics work group, which will periodically organise similar workshops and joint activities in the fields of technology, communications and internationalisation.
