On 8 February representatives of the Fukushima Prefecture were invited by Basque Trade & Investment to meet with ten Basque energy organisations to identify potential collaboration opportunities in the development of a region that aspires to become 100% renewable by 2040.

On a reverse trade mission organised by Basque Trade & Investment, representatives of the Fukushima Prefecture government and their energy agency met with the Basque Energy Cluster and ten organisations interested in exploring collaboration opportunities with the Japanese region. Fukushima is one of the places where the Japanese government is most interested in implementing renewable energy and there are large investments planned for wind, photovoltaic solar, geothermal and hydrogen energy. A presentation is attached for more information.

After a first institutional meeting with the Basque Government and the Basque Energy Agency (EVE), the business session started with a general overview of the energy plans in the Basque Country, by the Basque Energy Cluster, and in Fukushima. Then each participant briefly presented their own activity. The following organisations took part: AEROBLADE, BIMEP, DEUSTOTECH, IDOM, INGETEAM, PORETUNE, SAITEC, SENER, TECNALIA and UPV-EHU. After the meeting, the Japanese delegation was able to visit the WINDBOX testing ad validation centre, IK4-TEKNIKER technology centre, and the HAIZEA WIND facilities.

At the end of the day the Japanese delegation declared that they were very interested in continuing their collaboration with Basque companies, especially because of the strong development of renewable energy in the region.
