Cluster Activities
Representatives from SPRI and the clusters for Environment (ACLIMA), Foundry (AFV), Paper (CLUSTERPAPEL), Steel Industry (SIDEREX), and Energy (ACE) met on July 13 in Bilbao to establish the DCARTECH alliance. Through this alliance, the five clusters will become part of the working dynamics of the NZBISC initiative to develop intermediation activities between supply and demand within their respective sectors.
The DCARTECH alliance aims to promote intermediation between technological supply and demand for the decarbonization of highly energy-consuming segments within the Basque industry. To achieve this, ACLIMA, AFV, CLUSTERPAPEL, and SIDEREX, representing the industries demanding technological solutions for decarbonization, and the Energy Cluster, representing the collective offering these solutions, have established this collaboration, which will be implemented over the next two years.
On the other hand, the Net Zero Basque Industrial Super Cluster (NZBISC) initiative, driven by SPRI, Iberdrola, and Petronor, seeks to accelerate the path to net-zero emissions in the Basque Country by promoting decarbonization of energy supply and energy efficiency in industrial sectors, as well as creating market opportunities based on the scaling of new technologies and innovative services.
Given its scope and strategic nature, the NZBISC initiative provides the ideal global framework for carrying out the supply-demand intermediation activities proposed in DCARTECH. Thus, the five clusters will integrate into the working dynamics of NZBISC and collaborate in alignment with its objectives.
Among the planned activities, it is envisaged to contrast and validate the documents generated in NZBISC, including the Roadmaps for the decarbonization of energy-intensive industrial sectors in the Basque Country (such as steel, cement, foundry, pulp and paper, and refining), and the Value Chains for the development of decarbonization technologies and solutions (such as Energy Efficiency, Oxycombustion, Heat Pumps, and Hydrogen) proposed in those roadmaps. Additionally, the goal is to identify and interconnect companies from different value chains, define and drive collaborative projects, and actively participate in upcoming phases of NZBISC.
With this purpose in mind, the Sectorial Forum for Industrial Decarbonization will be launched in the second half of the year as a periodic meeting point between technological suppliers and business demand, with the aim of identifying and activating collaboration opportunities. This forum will include the participation of companies from the five clusters involved in the aforementioned value chains.
The DCARTECH alliance is supported by the Basque Government's Department of Economic Development, Sustainability, and Environment through the ELKARTEK Program in the Type III project modality.
