Recovering residual heat from industrial processes
The CALOR project is a Strategic Initiative which has resulted from the Advanced Manufacturing Steering Group (Basque Industry 4.0). Its purpose is to help create an industry that uses resources more efficiently by taking advantage of the residual heat from manufacturing processes.
With regards to scope, this Strategic Initiative is also directly related to one of the priority areas of the technology strategy for energy (EnergiBasque 2.0): Energy Efficiency.
Launched in 2014, the CALOR Project involves and is directly promoted by key agents from the fields of industry and science and technology which are based in the Basque Country.
The common goal is to valorisate waste heat (thermal energy) from the manufacturing industry in an efficient and profitable way, creating new business opportunities (from a cost perspective to a revenue perspective).
In order to achieve this, the CALOR Project aims to develop, apply and market innovative solutions (new technologies and new business models) which enable Basque industry to cut the amount spent on energy by over €180 million per year, reducing the direct cost of production and boosting competitiveness.
New business models which are based on new technologies will also help to create activities, jobs and added value talent in the field of energy management.
The initiative is currently benefiting from the involvement and active participation of 75 organisations, companies from 9 industrial sectors, companies from the supply chain (equipment manufacturers, engineering firms, integrating companies, ESCOs) and scientific/technological agents (universities, cooperative research centres and technology centres).
The CALOR Project therefore acts as a forum for public-private partnership, where agents can come together and showcase their different skills (the Technical Office comprises Innobasque, the Basque Energy Cluster, SPRI - Basque Agency for Business Development, EVE - Basque Energy Board, Ihobe and CIC EnergiGUNE).
The following results have been attained so far:
Lastly, the CALOR Project is establishing the steps for creating a proven management model for collaborative innovation; a method which streamlines the decision-making process, encourages all agents to commit to an initiative on a larger scale and helps us to meet the targets which are set out in the Strategies for Advanced Manufacturing and Energy that have been set for the country and for individuals.
