The event, which was held on 25 June at the Bizkaia Aretoa, brought together around a hundred participants from research entities and companies with R&D activities in the field of marine renewable energies, with a special focus on the technological challenges of the offshore wind sector.
The 6th Marine Energy Conference was organised by EUSKAMPUS FUNDAZIOA, on this occasion with the special collaboration of the Basque Energy Cluster. The main objective was to bring together the technological challenges of the Basque marine renewable energy sector and to share the main breakthroughs of the scientific-technological agents that form part of the JRL-ORE (Joint Research Lab on Offshore Renewable Energy): TECNALIA, UPV-EHU and BCAM. Offshore renewables are one of the main commitments in the Basque Country’s RIS3 strategy as part of the energy priority.
The conference began with presentations by several JRL-ORE researchers on their most recent progress. Antonio Ugarte, the Director of CENER’s Wind Energy Department was the main keynote speaker, who reviewed the main challenges that the offshore wind sector faces today. Representatives from the companies IBERMATICA, SAITEC, SENER and SIEMENS GAMESA later took part in a round table moderated by the Basque Energy Cluster where an interesting conversation was held on the main challenges faced by the sector from the Basque perspective, focussing on key areas such as digitalisation and the development of floating platforms.
This year’s event was completed with a meeting between companies and students in the afternoon, in order to identify End of Master’s Project proposals for students of the Master in Renewable Energy in the Marine Environment and those of different related Master’s degrees at the UPV-EHU School of Engineering.
