The company Nautilus invited the Basque Energy Cluster to attend the workshop in Trondheim (Norway) and give a presentation on the capabilities of Basque companies in the offshore wind sector, and more specifically on those that are positioned to develop floating foundation solutions for wind turbines.
Nautilus’ mission is the development, production, installation and marketing of floating platform for wind turbines in offshore environments. The company is owned by 5 technological and industrial partners: Tecnalia, Ormazabal, Vicinay, Astilleros Murueta and Tamoin.
The workshop was held on 16 March at the SINTEF Ocean facilities in Trondheim (http://www.sintef.no/en/ocean/#/) and was organised by Nautilus in collaboration with Tecnalia and the Norwegian Seaweed Technology Center SINTEF. The objective was to test a scale model of the NAUTILUS platform in the SINTEF wave tank, within the framework of the European Project Lifes50+.
The workshop included speakers from ENOVA (the Norwegian Energy Agency), SINTEF Ocean, Siemens-Gamesa, Statoil, ACS-Cobra, and Ignacio Martí, the Chairman of International Energy Agency (IEA) wind energy area. The Basque Country was represented by Jesús Busturia, the General Manager of Nautilus, and José Ignacio Hormaeche, the Basque Energy Cluster Manager.
The Basque Energy Cluster’s presentation focussed on demonstrating the technological development and industrial production capacities of Basque companies in the offshore wind sector. It presented the “Offshore Wind Basque Country” trademark to do so, which encompasses all of the over 50 Basque companies that are active in the offshore wind value chain. The presentation specifically highlighted the significant potential of Basque companies to design, develop and manufacture floating foundation solutions, with companies such as Nautilus, Saitec and Esteyco, as well as the excellent position of component and auxiliary system suppliers such as Vicinay and Navacel within this market, who have supplied equipment for Hywind Scotland, the fist floating wind farm to be developed by STATOIL.
Around 60 people attended the workshop, representing companies, research centres and public European entities, including the General Managers of SPRI (Alex Arriola) and EVE (Iñigo Ansola).
