On 6 June, Enerclub, the Spanish Energy Club, presented the book “Energía y Ciudades (“Energy and Cities”) in Bilbao. The event, sponsored by Iberdrola, took place in the Torre Iberdrola's auditorium and was attended by representatives of Iberdrola, the Basque Energy Agency (EVE), Bilbao City Council and the Basque Energy Cluster, as well as 50 other people.
The book's slogan is “Every citizen and every action counts” and it aims to raise public awareness of the fact that how we face humanity's great challenges (the coverage of energy demand, social welfare and environmental sustainability) will depend on how we use energy.
The event was officially opened by José Arceluz, Head of Iberdrola's Department for Energy and Climate Action, who highlighted the great challenge of climate change and the important role of the electricity sector in the improvement of citizens' quality of life. Then, Arcadio Gutiérrez, Enerclub CEO, mentioned the good international position of the Basque Country in the industrial field and, specifically, in the energy sector. Enrique Monasterio, Director of Development and Innovation of the Basque Energy Agency, explained the three strategic lines on which the EVE is working: energy efficiency, strengthening of renewable energy and diversification of sources.
After that, Antonio Gomis, General Coordinator of the study, presented the work and its most important conclusions. He stressed the importance of raising social awareness in the process of moving towards a more sustainable energy model in which cities play an essential role, as well as citizens, both individually and collectively, by adopting good practices every day in order to reach the sustainability goals that have been set.
After the book presentation there was a round table discussion with Curro Laveron, Head of Energy Policy at Iberdrola; Enrique Monasterio, Director of Development and Innovation of the EVE; Mikel González, Head of the Environment Department of Bilbao City Council; and Begoña Molinete, Project Manager for the Basque Energy Cluster. Some of the issues that were discussed were the role of digitalisation and technology in city environments, consumer empowerment, the influence of European policies and guidelines, smart grids and sustainable mobility as development vectors and the importance of institutional and corporate leadership in this area.
Alonso Gil, Deputy Mayor and Councillor of Mobility and Sustainability of Bilbao City Council, was in charge of closing the event. He stressed the importance of the study conducted and highlighted Bilbao's commitment to sustainable urban mobility as a means of improving citizens' health and quality of life.
