In the event, held on 10th June at the headquarters of Tecnalia on the Bizkaia Technology Park, 13 companies from the Steel and Foundry sectors evaluated new processes, materials and technologies with potential to reduce carbon footprint, which were presented by Mondragon Unibertsitatea.
The workshop was structured around two separate blocks: an initial plenary session, in which both projects were presented, which was opened by José Ignacio Hormaeche, Managing Director of the Basque Energy Cluster, and participative dynamics in two work groups (Steel and Foundry), in which representatives of the companies evaluated diverse decarbonisation solutions and they discussed their technical-economic viability, impact on the reduction of CO2 emissions and their possible implementation horizon.
In the initial session, Jose Ignacio Hormaeche presented the BIDERATU project, led by Tecnalia in collaboration with the Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3), Mondragon University, the Basque Energy Cluster and ACLIMA. This project aims to develop a modelling tool to support strategic decision-making in the industrial sector and public administrations in relation to the energy transition in the Basque Country that enables the best technological, investment and business model strategies based on the circular economy to be identified for different decarbonisation scenarios.
Then, Cristina Oyón, Director of Technology, Innovation and Sustainability at SPRI, presented the BASQUE NET ZERO INDUSTRIAL SUPER CLUSTER initiative, in which the Basque Government-SPRI, Iberdrola, Petronor and the Basque Energy Cluster collaborate, among other clusters, in order to accelerate the reduction of emissions in Basque industry.
After the coffee break and networking session, the work group dynamics moderated by Mondragon University kicked off, which presented a full analysis of the technological solutions and new business models for the Iron & Steel and Casting sectors within the framework of the energy transition, circular economy and sustainability. Professionals from these sectors individually assessed the measures presented and went on to give their feedback. Finally, an interesting discussion developed with the exchange of opinions and contributions in relation to the diverse decarbonisation solutions, followed by the evaluation of potential pilot projects or demonstrators that companies are developing or consider developing. Within the framework of the BIDERATU project, the contrast of the industrial decarbonisation solutions will enable them to be prioritised and characterised in the modelling of the tool developed. The results of this joint workshop will also be applied to the subsequent phases of the BASQUE NET ZERO INDUSTRIAL SUPER CLUSTER initiative.
