On Thursday 23rd February, the Basque Energy Cluster organised a workshop on eco-innovation, eco-design and the circular economy in conjunction with Ihobe, the Public Environmental Management Company of the Basque Government. The workshop, led by IK Ingeniería, was received with great interest by the participating companies and is a new activity in the promotion of this competitive differentiation element within the cluster's activities.
Given the increasing importance of eco-innovation in the energy sector, the Basque Energy Cluster, in conjunction with Ihobe, organised a workshop that served to provide an updated vision of the different implications of eco-innovation and the circular economy for the associated companies, from the regulatory point of view and from the competitive factor.
At the beginning of the session, Ignacio Quintana, Eco-efficiency and Eco-design Coordinator at Ihobe, gave a brief introduction into eco-innovation and the subsidies offered for its organisation in the 2016 call for projects of this type. Ignacio also gave a detailed explanation of the Basque Ecodesign Center, the entity whose purpose is the conceptualisation and implementation of innovative eco-design projects and whose partners are EDP NATURGAS, GAMESA, IBERDROLA, ORMAZABAL, ORONA, VICINAY, EROSKI, EUSKALTEL and CIE AUTOMOTIVE, with significant presence of companies from the energy sector.
Later, in the first part of the workshop, IK Ingeniería, the expert consultancy firm in innovation and environmental improvement of products and services, gave a presentation on the concepts of life cycle thinking and product environmental improvement, with special emphasis on the way of implementing the ISO 14006 eco-design methodology at company level and how to argue the results.
In the second part of the workshop, the project carried out with the support of Ihobe and in conjunction with ORONA and GAMESA focusing on Sustainability Management from the Value Chain perspective was presented. The Basque Energy Cluster has worked within this project along with drivers on the definition of a procedure for the diagnosis and definition of an improvement strategy for companies considering the entire value chain, which was presented and distributed to those present.
Finally, the companies worked on ideas to continue working on joint projects in the energy sector, whereby all of those present expressed their interest in exploring initiatives that enable them to continue advancing in the incorporation of eco-innovation concepts in their activity.
