On Wednesday 14 December, UPV-EHU Professor Jesús Mari Blanco presented an ambitious project at the GTEO – the launch of a Master’s in Marine Renewable Energy in collaboration with the University of Strathclyde (Glasgow), École Centrale de Nantes and the NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology), with the support of Tecnalia, the University of Cantabria and the Basque Centre for Applied Mathematics (BCAM).
During the Work Group session, Professor Blanco explained all the details of the Master's degree, which is expected to be launched as a UPV-EHU degree for 2017/2018 and, if the European Commission approves it, as an ERASMUS MUNDUS degree in 2018/2019, and in that case the training would take place over four semesters in different locations.
The course content includes four different modules: theoretical bases and resource; conversion technology and marine structures; development of offshore renewable energy farms; and environmental, legal and financial issues. The course aims to train different types of experts in the following fields: offshore technology; marine structures; naval and farm access systems; marine operations; maintenance and security; grid connection and integration; environmental, legal, regulatory and financial aspects; and farm promotion and design.
It is a particularly ambitious project because it is hard to achieve the ERASMUS MUNDUS accreditation, with success rates of around 20%. The UPV-EHU currently only offers one Master's degree with this accreditation. The Basque Energy Cluster will be supporting this project because it is of great interest to companies in the sector.
