MHI Vestas has confirmed a deal to supply three V164 offshore turbines to EDP Renewables’ 25MW WindFloat Atlantic project off Portugal.

The 8.4MW hardware will be “the largest and most powerful” ever installed on a floating foundation, said the manufacturer.
The deal was first reported exclusively in subscriber-only newsletter reNEWS in 2016. “This firm order confirms MHI Vestas's leadership in floating offshore wind,” said MHI Vestas chief executive Philippe Kavafyan. “Building on our experience with WindPlus and Principle Power dating back to 2011, we are particularly pleased that WindFloat Atlantic will feature three of our V164-8.4 MW turbines, the largest and most powerful turbines ever installed onto a floating platform,” he added. Hardware stretching to 190 metres will sit atop Principle Power semi-submersible foundations some 20km from shore in water depths of 100 metres. Vestas previously supplied the original 2MW WindFloat demonstrator (pictured), which has since been relocated to Scotland as part of the Kincardine floating wind project. The latter stages of the Scottish wind farm are also due to feature MHI Vestas turbines.
