Only 10 cluster associations in Spain have received the award, along with 7 organisations from Europe's Energy and Environment sector
The Basque Energy Cluster (ACE) has joined a select group of 119 clusters in 18 countries to receive “excellence” status. Only 10 associations in Spain, along with 7 Energy and Environment clusters throughout Europe (2 in Denmark, 3 in Norway and 1 in Austria - and now ACE) have obtained the classification.
ECEI certification, awarded by the European Cluster Excellence Initiative, is given in three categories - gold, silver and bronze - and is gaining importance in Europe as a means of validating the capacity, experience and results of cluster associations in the management of their activities. When ACE became the first Basque cluster to be granted Gold Label certification two years ago, it joined a select group of just 66 organisations.
To be eligible for the award, candidates are assessed on a basis of 31 indicators, including documentary evidence and interviews with cluster managers and teams. ACE ranked considerably higher this time around, from 84% in 2017 up to 91% this year (gold certification is awarded to scores of 80% and up). ACE's most highly rated indicators included strategic planning, activity and service quality, level of media recognition, and degree of partner involvement.
