On Easter week, the Basque Energy Cluster took an exploratory trip to Santiago de Chile as a part of their Space2IDGO project. The goal of this project, between European clusters, is to identify business opportunities in Chile within the energy sector in aerospace industry companies (drone companies, companies using satellite tools for O&M for renewable energy plants, etc.). The Basque Energy Cluster held meetings with different agents of the energy sector to analyse the country’s situation and the business opportunities for companies of the sector in different technological applications to improve equipment and power plants in Chile.
On 23 April, the Basque Energy Cluster went on an exploratory trip to Chile with the French cluster, Aerospace Valley, as part of the Space2IDGO project. Eurochile, an entity offering services to promote collaboration between European and Chilean companies, contributed by organising the agenda. The purpose of the trip was to identify institutions to collaborate with within the Chilean energy sector, offering the services of the Basque O&M companies in renewable energy plants. These types of services focused on new aerospace technologies, such as satellite images for the maintenance of isolated photovoltaic farms or drones for the maintenance of electricity networks or renewable energy generation plants.
The Eurochile foundation organised meetings between key institutions from the energy sector and the cluster to discuss the development of renewable energy in the country, regulations and the incorporation of new technologies to its energy network. Some of the companies with which they met included: the National Energy Commission (CNE), Enel Green Power, the renewable marine energy research centre (MERIC) and the Chilean renewable energy association (ACERA).
CNE explained the current regulatory trends in the country in the field of energy (highlighting the standstill in the regulation and installation of smart meters), as well as their interest in new satellite technologies to measure hydric resources in the country. Enel showed interest in drone technologies for O&M of its renewable energy plants in Chile, as well as their availability to meet with innovative companies to improve production in their plants. MERIC focused its attention on the marine renewable energy area of the Basque Energy Cluster, their value chain and the BiMEP infrastructure.
