21 May 2019
The Basque Energy Cluster co-organised a working session on 21 May with Offshore Väst, a partner of the ELBE project, which included visits to key organisations from the renewable marine energy sector in Sweden and a B2B meeting with these companies and other attendees. The event took place in Gothenburg and had over 50 participants from European countries forming part of the ELBE project (Sweden, Scotland, Denmark and Belgium), in addition to the attendance of Basque and Norwegian entities which further enriched the session.
The third and last session organised under the framework of the ELBE project, following the events held in Aberdeen and Belgium, has served to close the first phase of the project and to strengthen the ties between European countries in the ELBE regions. Four Basque companies attended this session: BIMEP, DITREL, EVE and ZUNIBAL. In total, they could speak with over 30 European organisations involved in the development of the renewable marine energy sector.
The session began with two visits to a current energy converter developer, Minesto, as well as a ROV and marine analysis systems manufacturer, MMT. Both visits helped to understand the two different realities faced by the marine energy value chain in Sweden and the challenges experienced in each organisation.
The presentation session was divided into two blocks, each with interesting presentations and different views of the marine energy sector. It began with a presentation of ABB's vision of the offshore wind sector and its experience in high-calibre projects, providing an overview of the electricity sector in these projects. Afterwards, the different materials used in marine structures were addressed in the first block, with Hydro Extrusions discussing on aluminium and SSAB presenting the benefits of steel. The second block dealt with the development of marine renewable energies, with DNV GL showcasing the studies they have carried out, particularly for floating wind energy, and Sigma Energy & Marine sharing their vision on how to approach the commercialisation of marine renewable energies by strengthening the supply chain and collaborations. More technical aspects of design and manufacturing were discussed in the third block by two entrepreneurial companies in floating wind energy - SeaTwirl, and marine current energy - Minesto. To close the presentations, Innovation Norway, as guest organisation, summarised the Norwegian vision of renewable marine energy and the Nordic country’s cluster policy.
To complete the session, the attending companies held a series of B2B meetings. Over 20 meetings were held between attendees to the event.
A series of visits to leading Swedish laboratories in the renewable marine energy sector were carried out on the following day for foreign entities: SSPA and RISE.
