10 Nov 2020
Held on 10 November, the webinar provided Basque companies with updated information and potential business opportunities in the Chilean power market, focussing on renewable energy and power grids, as well as putting businesses and associations from both countries in touch and fostering links between them. In his opening remarks, José Ignacio Hormaeche, Managing Director of the Basque Energy Cluster Association, spoke of the links between the Cluster and Chilean organisations in recent years, saying that he hoped they would continue going forward. More than 30 Basque businesses took part at the event, which gave them the opportunity to share their questions and concerns with other participants.
Chile has been a major business partner of the Basque Country for some time now, with a high presence in Basque companies. At sector level, capital goods are the area where Basque businesses have greatest weight.
During the webinar, the Chilean Ministry for Energy spoke of the country's ambitious goals to promote its energy transition, aiming for 70% of all energy produced coming from renewable sources by 2030. In line with this goal, in recent years the country has invested heavily in this sector, particularly in wind and solar power, and in renovating its electricity transmission and distribution grids, as well as funding new areas, such as green hydrogen, which both regions are backing as drivers of economic growth. This talk was followed by another, given by InvestChile, on the main subsidies available in the country for international investment projects.
The webinar ended with a round-table discussion, chaired by Marta Alonso, General Manager South America GES, at which Claudio Seebach, Executive CEO of Generadoras de Chile, and Gabriel Jaime Melguizo, General Manager of ISA Interchile (a leading power transmission company in Chile), outlined the main investment plans in place in the country's private sphere, as well as the areas offering the greatest opportunities for Basque companies, focussing on equipment (power electronics, protection and control elements and power storage systems), development of advanced projects and services, and training and qualification of technical personnel in assembling and repairing these technologies.
