As part of a raft of initiatives aimed at reviving commercial activity after the COVID-19 crisis, Basque Trade & Investment and the Basque Energy Cluster (ACE) have come together to offer a cycle of webinars on emerging markets in the wind power sector. The fourth session, held on 16 September, focussed on the Colombian wind power market, which plans to have over 1000 MW installed by 2023 and over 3000 MW installed by 2030.
The installed capacity in Colombia at the moment is less than 100 MW, but after a number of tenders in 2019, over 1000 MW are foreseen for 2023 and the aim is to reach 3000 MW by 2030. During the webinar, the Ministry of Mines and Energy and the Mining and Energy Planning Unit presented Colombia's new policies to expand renewable energy and set in motion the energy transition. They also showcased the country’s roadmap for the renewable energy sector and talked about the need to improve the electrical grid in order to install the planned renewable capacity. Furthermore, the wind power projects carried out and those in the pipeline were tackled, as well as the most suitable areas for wind power and other areas that are currently being studied.
