Representatives of the Bizkaia Provincial Council (DFB) presented Biscay Startup Bay, the International Entrepreneurship Centre, to Basque Energy Cluster companies. At the event, Iberdrola, one of the partners in the initiative, presented its entrepreneurship and innovation strategy, and Arrecife Systems shared its enriching experience at the Cambridge Innovation Center in Boston.
The session was held on 12 April in the Bizkaia Aretoa building of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) in Bilbao. It enabled the Basque Energy Cluster companies to learn first-hand about the objectives and breakthroughs in the development of the initiative. Biscay Startup Bay is an entrepreneurship hub promoted by the Bizkaia Provincial Council (DFB), in collaboration with the Bilbao City Council and BBK Foundation, with an international scope, focusing on identifying, supporting, creating and attracting startups and entrepreneurs with great potential, based on the region's strengths and alongside international companies. Its medium-term vision is to become the leading entrepreneurship and business innovation ecosystem in the south of Atlantic Europe.
To achieve this goal, the DFB is working alongside the Cambridge Innovation Center (CIC) in Boston (USA), where the world's most influential group of startups is concentrated, and Basque companies, with the aim of turning the Biscay Startup Bay international hub into a benchmark for three vertical business areas: energy (electricity), mobility and foodtech; and two horizontal ones: Deep Learning and Blockchain.
Iberdrola, an important partner in this initiative, also attended the event. The company's startup manager explained their entrepreneurship strategy and innovation tools in Bizkaia, including those based on traditional collaborative R&D structures (projects), and those that are part of the Innovation Programme with suppliers, as well as a series of specific tools that facilitate the journey through the different stages of the entrepreneurship process: development of entrepreneurial skills (impulse), network of accelerators and incubators (acceleration) and the Perseo Fund (investment).
Other speakers included representatives of Arrecife Systems, a Bizkaia-based startup specialised in the development of a wave energy converter that aims to simulate the natural behaviour of a coral reef. They talked about their productive six-month stay at the CIC in Boston thanks to the DFB's Programme, highlighting that this stay really boosted their product development roadmap and international positioning strategy.
