The meeting, which took place on February 3 at the Gipuzkoa Technology Park, was chaired by the Basque Government's Minister for Economic Development, Sustainability and the Environment, Arantxa Tapia, and served to set out the work plan to be implemented in the next few months.
The Basque initiative, which was presented at the United Nations Climate Change Conference 2021 in Glasgow (COP26), is one of the four regional projects that form part of the Transitioning Industrial Clusters towards Net Zero promoted by the WEF. Its objective is to drive the industry's transition to net zero emissions by 2050 through action in the four development areas defined by the WEF: energy efficiency, renewable electrification, hydrogen and CO2 capture. It also aims to offer experiences and good practices to other regions so that they can make commitments to such a transition.
The meeting was chaired by the Regional Minister Arantxa Tapia, and was attended by Mikel Amundarain, Deputy Minister for Industry, Ana Camacho, Director of Industry and Energy Transition, Iñigo Ansola, General Manager of EVE, Aitor Urzelai, Director of the SPRI Group, Petronor and Iberdrola, as the driving force behind the initiative, and representatives from the refining (Basque Energy Cluster), cement (Aclima), iron and steel (Siderex), foundry (AFV) and paper (Basque Paper Cluster) sectors.
In the first phase, which is expected to run from April 2022 to April 2023, the work plan will focus on the sectors with the highest CO2 emissions in the Basque Country and will be structured into different work areas. Among others, these include identifying the industrial processes with the highest energy consumption, specifying possible technologies and measures to reduce CO2 emissions linked to these processes, assessing the current and potential value chain in the Basque Country for developing and providing the technologies and measures identified, and defining possible pilot or demonstration projects for applying technological solutions to the industrial processes analysed.
The Basque Energy Cluster outlined the capabilities of the Basque energy sector in meeting the challenge of decarbonising industry, and highlighted the opportunities for developing new technologies and innovative services that this initiative provides for the energy sector value chain.
