A double seminar, attended by about a dozen of European regions, was held in Bilbao on 16 May concerning the monitoring and future steps of the Vanguard Initiative and the launch of NESSIE, a European project which aims to implement three solution demonstrators against corrosion problems in marine energy.
The morning session of the seminar, sponsored by SPRI in collaboration with the Basque Energy Cluster, focused on the launch of the NESSIE project and the afternoon session reviewed the progress of the energy-related pilot project of the Vanguard Initiative.
The NESSIE project, due for completion in April 2019, is coordinated by Scottish Enterprise (Scotland) and involves the regions of Asturias, Flanders (Belgium), Emilia-Romagna (Italy), Lombardy (Italy), Scania (Sweden) and the Basque Country, represented by the Basque Energy Cluster. This is an ambitious effort aiming for the joint development, by companies of the participating regions, of solutions against corrosion in the most promising energy sources such as wave power, tidal currents or offshore wind power, based largely on technologies and capabilities already available in more traditional value chains such as offshore or Oil&Gas. The project is based on an eminently practical approach whereby operations are geared towards the implementation of three demonstration projects, led by driver enterprises and with the participation of supplier companies with high value-added solutions.
Similarly, a meeting for monitoring the energy-related pilot of the Vanguard Initiative was held in the afternoon, and was attended by the regions of Andalusia and Song of Fjordane (Norway), in addition to the NESSIE project members. Among other topics, the meeting focused precisely on the proposal of demo projects similar to NESSIE in other areas of interest for offshore energy, such as sensor systems and remote monitoring, or the logistics of large components.
