From November 2019, and for a period of 5 years, ATELIER will make possible the development and implementation of Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) in 8 European cities led by Amsterdam and Bilbao, combining the knowledge and experience of 30 entities from 11 countries.
The project, supported by the European Commission in the framework of the Smart Cities H2020 call, will demonstrate innovative solutions in the districts of Zorrotzaurre (Bilbao) and Buiksloterham (Amsterdam) by integrating smart technologies into buildings and urban mobility. The goal is to generate more energy than is consumed and thus contribute to environmental sustainability and the well-being of citizens.
Through an extensive plan of scheduled actions in both cities, it is expected to generate an energy surplus of 1,340 MWh, reduce CO2 emissions by 1.7 KTon and NOx emissions by 23 Ton. The cities of Bratislava, Budapest, Copenhagen, Krakow, Matosinhos and Riga will replicate and adapt the solutions implemented in Amsterdam and Bilbao as part of their evolution towards a smart and energy-efficient city model.
Citizens, local communities, industry and knowledge agents will be highly involved in decision-making and project-related activities through the so-called Innovation Ateliers. They will be launched in Amsterdam and Bilbao and will serve to adapt the proposed developments to the particularities of each city, as well as to explore new business models associated with their implementation.
The kick-off meeting of the project, which will last until 2024, took place on 2 and 3 November in Amsterdam with the participation of 70 people from the 30 partners that make up the consortium and with the outstanding presence of representatives of the municipal corporations, who ratified the strategic nature of the project and their commitment to the objectives set.
The work team for the Zorrotzaurre pilot project, led by Bilbao City Council, involves Tecnalia, EVE, Iberdrola, Telur, DeustoTech, Zabala Innovation Consulting and the Basque Energy Cluster. The latter will provide support for dissemination activities and the organisation of the Innovation Ateliers in Bilbao.
