The Basque Energy Cluster held its 2019 Annual General Meeting at Bizkaia Technology Park in order to take stock of a positive 2018 financial year for sector companies, with overall growth of around 2% compared to the previous financial year. The best results corresponded to companies in the renewable energy markets at international level, especially in wind and photovoltaic energy, which show significant prospects for growth in the years ahead.
The Basque Energy Cluster currently has 174 associates. Worldwide, the energy sector turns over around €55,000M and in the Basque Country, it employs over 24,000 people. Following the approval of the accounts for the 2018 financial year and of the 2019 Management Plan, President Luis Rodríguez Llopis welcomed those attending the institutional part and thanked Councillor Arantxa Tapia for her presence and for supporting the Cluster. The Councillor explained the Basque economy’s good progress, while also asking the companies to strengthen their commitment to innovation as a key competitive factor. She also underlined the importance of the Basque Country’s energy sector and highlighted recent Basque Parliament agreements to encourage the development of renewable energy plants in the Basque Country.
The Managing Director of the Basque Energy Cluster, José Ignacio Hormaeche, presented the Basque Energy Cluster’s Strategic Plan for the period 2019-2022, prepared through a process with the participation of more than 80 associated companies. The Strategic Plan proposes, as a first value proposition, business stimulation through six sector forums led by driving-force companies and establishes, as a strategic objective, the strengthening of support for SMEs in collaborative projects in Technology and international activities.
The guest speaker was Jose Manuel García Gavilán, Director of Strategic Customers in Google Cloud, who delivered an inspiring presentation entitled “Machine Learning: Electricity of the Future”. He also stressed that Google is currently the biggest consumer of renewable energy in the world and presented some of the more novel Google applications in the energy sector, some of which have already taken shape in new companies within the “Alphabet” group (the corporation that owns Google).
