During the workshop, the main outcome of the project was presented: the digital platform to process data from the hydraulic pitch system of a wind turbine, which enables failures in this system to be reduced at offshore wind farms.
On 14th October 2021, a workshop was held in Leuven (Belgium) to present the results within the framework of the EU DOCC-OFF project, funded by the EU's European Maritime and Fisheries Fund of, led by the Basque Energy Cluster Association, in which HINE, XABET and SIRRIS/OWI Lab has also participated. The workshop was organised by SIRRIS/OWI Lab and was attended by 32 people in person and 100 people remotely.
It included an initial block in which representatives from the four companies involved in the project participated to share their contributions. José Ignacio Hormaeche (Basque Energy Cluster Association), as coordinator, presented the project as a success story for the application of digital technologies in offshore renewable energies. He showed a video that reveals the project’s main achievements and challenges, and he proposed an exit strategy for the exploitation of the results. Hormaeche also raised sharing operational wind turbine data by their owners as the main barrier to promoting digitalisation in the sector and enhancing the competitiveness of the wind power value chain. Aritz Zubizarreta (HINE), as the developer of the hydraulic pitch system, gave an overview of the results and conclusions drawn from the Failure Mode Effect and Criticality Analysis (FMECA), whilst Iker Elorza (IKERLAN), detailed the results obtained from the simulations and tests performed on a laboratory scale. Zuriñe Varela (XABET) is the person in charge of the main project result: the development of the digital platform. As such, she gave a live demonstration of the tool, which is capable of detecting possible failures that may arise in the future, displaying the findings to the customer in an easy and visual way. The platform can also show the evolution of the health of the system at different time intervals, and in this respect, statistical modelling and data analysis have proven to be useful for the detection of potential problems in the hydraulic pitch system.
Finally, Bram Cloet (SIRRIS) revealed the system’s large-scale validation and demonstration strategy on a real offshore wind turbine. To do so, a full analysis of the data requirements has been carried out and the test bench has been selected for the large-scale validation campaign. This was followed by some industrial talks, in which speakers from leading companies in the offshore wind power sector, such as RAMBOLL, ORE CATAPULT and SIEMENS INDUSTRIES, shared the latest tendencies in the sector, as well as their know-how on the development of digital twins for offshore wind power.
Lastly, Vincenzo Gente, Senior Project Adviser at CINEA (EU), closed the event by highlighting the major impact potential of DOCC-OFF, mainly due to its link with the green and digital energy transition.
