The event took place on 23 November at the Gipuzkoa Science and Technology Park - Orona Fundazioa, and over 40 representatives of the sector attended.
Aimed at Basque science and technology leaders involved in developing equipment and solutions for power electronics, the session began with an introduction to the possibilities of silicon carbide in power electronic applications by Luis Mir, Head of Power Electronics Department at IK4-Ikerlan. Then, Marcos Suarez, project manager of the Basque Energy Cluster, explained the key role of power electronics in the different areas considered in EnergiBasque, the industrial development and technology strategy in the Basque Country.
The more technical content began with a presentation by Alejandro Esquivel, representing the company Wolfsweed-CREE, who commented on the present and future situation of the SiC semiconductor industry. This was followed by Alex Rujas, head of the IK4-Ikerlan power converters specialisation team, who shared his experiences in designing converters based on this new technology.
After a coffee break, Txomin Nievas, Technology Officer of CAF Power&Automation, explained the application of SiC to rail traction, specifically in the context of the Roll2Rail results, a H2020 project which aims to develop disruptive technologies for the rail sector.
